Disc Harrows for Tractors — Effective Post-Harvest Tillage and Soil Preparation
A disc harrow is one of the most important tillage implements on any farm. It is primarily used for stubble cultivation after harvest, mixing crop residues and straw into the soil, and loosening the topsoil without inverting it. With a disc harrow, you can efficiently prepare fields for oilseed rape, winter cereals, or other subsequent crops — faster and more economically than with a plough.
Applications of Disc Harrows on the Farm
- Post-harvest cultivation and shallow ploughing — rapid chopping and mixing of crop residues into the soil to accelerate decomposition.
- Seedbed preparation for oilseed rape and winter cereals — loosening and levelling the field within the narrow agrotechnical window between harvest and sowing.
- Organic fertiliser incorporation — mixing manure or slurry into the topsoil layer.
- Weed control — mechanical destruction of germinating weeds and volunteer plants after harvest.
Disc Harrow vs Rotary Harrow — Key Differences
The disc harrow works at 8–20 cm depth, cuts and mixes soil with angled discs, and handles large quantities of straw and residues. A rotary harrow works shallower (up to 10 cm) and intensively crumbles soil, best for pre-sowing finishing on clean seedbeds. Choose a disc harrow when crop residues are heavy; choose a rotary harrow for final seedbed preparation.
Types — Mounted and Trailed, Single and Double Row
We offer mounted (three-point linkage) and trailed disc harrows for tractors from 60 HP upwards, in single-row and double-row configurations. Double-row models deliver superior soil mixing thanks to two staggered disc gangs.
FAQ
What working depth does a disc harrow achieve?
Typically 8–20 cm, adjustable via disc angle and ballast weight.
How much horsepower is needed?
Mounted models from 60–80 HP; wider trailed models from 100 HP and above.
Can a disc harrow replace a plough?
In reduced or no-till systems, yes — for post-harvest operations it is a full alternative, saving time, fuel, and protecting soil structure.
