Spreaders and salt/fertiliser distributors — year-round performance
Spreaders and distributors are essential machines for every farm and for road maintenance crews alike. In the growing season they spread granular fertilisers, lime and mineral blends across wide working widths — in winter the same machine distributes road salt and grit, keeping surfaces safe. One investment, two critical applications throughout the year.
Types of spreaders available
Mounted disc spreaders
A disc spreader mounted on the three-point linkage of a tractor is the most popular solution for fertiliser application. Counter-rotating discs distribute granular fertiliser, lime or NPK blends over a working width of 6–18 m. Hopper capacities from 100 to 1200 kg make it easy to match the machine to your field size and tractor power.
Salt and grit spreaders
A tractor-mounted salt and grit spreader fitted with an auger or disc feed is ideal for winter road maintenance on municipal roads, car parks and private drives. It distributes road salt, salt–grit mixtures or pure grit evenly across a width of up to 4–6 m. Models with 200–400 l hoppers suit local roads, while 600–1000 l versions handle county-level routes.
Pneumatic and row spreaders
For precise starter fertilisation, pneumatic or row spreaders place the fertiliser dose directly in the crop row, minimising losses and improving nutrient use efficiency.
How to choose the right hopper capacity?
Capacity selection depends on field area, application rate and refill frequency. A 200 kg mounted fertiliser spreader suits plots up to 5 ha; 400–600 kg models fit 10–30 ha farms; hoppers above 800 kg are the right choice for large arable operations over 50 ha. For winter road maintenance, a 400 l tractor spreader is the optimum choice for municipalities and road contractors covering up to 20 km of route.
FAQ
Salt spreader or fertiliser spreader — which to buy?
If you only need a machine for winter salt and grit spreading, choose a dedicated salt spreader with an auger feed — it handles damp material better. If you want to spread both fertilisers and salt, opt for a disc spreader with adjustable slide gates: it will serve both purposes all year round.
What tractor is needed for a mounted spreader?
For spreaders up to 300 kg, a 25–35 hp tractor with category I linkage is sufficient. Machines of 400–800 kg require 40–60 hp and category II linkage. For hoppers over 1000 kg, a minimum 80 hp tractor with 540 rpm PTO is recommended.
Can a disc spreader be used for liquid fertiliser?
No — disc spreaders are designed for granular and free-flowing materials only (lime, urea, ammonium nitrate). Liquid fertilisers and slurry require a sprayer or a slurry tanker with a distribution boom.
